Today I became aware of the bird song as I walked outdoors in the countryside.
When we think about listening, what most often comes to mind is the act of listening to words spoken by another person.
And yet, there are so many other ways of listening and things to listen to and for.
There are often subtle sounds and signs that go unnoticed or are ignored and yet they have a powerful message and meaning.
For example, bird song can signal that Spring is here and that the weather is calm. But the sudden absence or quietening of bird song may be a signal that a storm is brewing and that we should take shelter.
Sometimes we need to listen to our body. What is it telling us if we truly listen? So often we ignore its’ messages and signs that we need more sleep or rest, better nutrition, exercise, social contact or even hugs!
And silence too can be something to pay attention and listen to. What does the lack of words or failure of contribution to a conversation show us?
What listening does require is stillness, presence and attention. The ability to truly focus on the message that is being conveyed to us and the true meaning of that message.
So often our temptation is to shift from listening and understanding, to problem solving and giving advice to others and even to ourselves. Instead of allowing the expression of feelings, processing of experiences and a depth of connection, there is a sense of urgency to find solutions.
Perhaps what we need most is “A heart to understand”, to simply acknowledge and accept a situation instead of the temptation to stick a plaster over it and carry on as before.
True listening can be a catalyst for reflection and an opportunity for a change of heart and direction as well as to genuine connection and understanding of each other and the world around us.
Sometimes people don’t need advice.
All they want is someone to listen and a heart to understand them.
